Located in the heart of the mountains, Shirakawa-go and Gokayama
two quiet villages crossed by a river and surrounded by rice fields. However,
these peoples have been considered adjacent World Heritage Site since 1995,
with its traditional houses built in the style gassho-zukuri. The main
feature of these wooden houses is their triangular sloping roof made of straw,
like hands in prayer (gassho), to better withstand the weight of snow, abundant
in this region. These are large houses 18 meters long and 10 meters wide
with four floors, where several generations live together. The top floor
is reserved traditionally for rearing silkworms.
